Luxury car maker Mercedes has revealed some of the details for its upcoming EQS release of the popular S-Class series, featuring loads of tech including biometric facial recognition capabilities, and a new ‘Hyperscreen’ control panel.
Though details of the new features have yet to be officially announced, Car Throttle reports that the vehicle will use facial recognition technology to recognize both the driver and passengers, and tailor various settings to the riders based on past preferences.
The vehicle will also feature what Mercedes is referring to as a ‘Hyperscreen’: a 1.4 meter-wide screen that covers the entire dashboard and features a dozen haptic-feedback actuators. This move away from analog controls means the only physical buttons in the EQS dashboard are a stop/start button, and a switch for the hazard lights.
The auto industry is quickly becoming a major commercial adopter of biometric technologies, with computer vision and facial recognition being among the most popular. Recent months have seen significant interest in the field of LiDAR technology, which could have major implications in the smart car industry.
It has yet to be officially revealed whether the EQS will also feature Mercedes’ MBUX (Merced-Benz User Experience) platform, which brings with it a slew of voice-based interactions, and allows for further user customization. Mercedes did recently announce the renewal of its partnership with artificial intelligence expert Cerence — whose speech recognition technology is behind MBUX — so the inclusion of that platform and its speech recognition capabilities certainly seems possible.
