New Rumor Points to Dual Face and Touch ID Utility for iPhone 13

April 9, 2021

A new iPhoneSoft rumor suggests that Apple is developing iOS 15 with an eye toward Touch ID. In that regard, the new operating system would come with an API that leverages Face and Touch ID to enable dual biometric authentication.

New Rumor Points to Dual Face and Touch ID Utility for iPhone 13

The new system would require users to complete both a face and a fingerprint scan to verify their identity when performing certain high-risk or high-value activities, such as the financial transactions that might be completed through a mobile banking app. For low-risk functions, it would allow the user to choose their preferred modality depending on the context, as in the case of using a fingerprint to unlock the phone while a mask is being worn.

Of course, such an API would be useless on a phone that does not support both forms of biometric identification. With that in mind, the report indicated that the iPhone 13 would be the first iPhone that supports Face and Touch ID, and even went on to predict that Touch ID would be realized in a sensor located under the phone’s display. In doing so, it echoes earlier rumors that have hinted that in-display Touch ID would arrive with the iPhone 13. It then took things one step further, implying that the phone’s Touch ID system would have a unique serial ID, require a proprietary Apple panel, and run directly through the A15 chip.

In other news, iPhoneSoft predicted that iOS 15 would feature a new drag-and-drop Control Center design comparable to the one that was introduced with macOS Big Sur. It also reported that Face ID is finally coming to the Mac, and will make its debut in the upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBooks and the iMac 2021. Apple is expected to make formal announcements about iOS 15 and the iPhone 13 at WWDC 21 on June 7.
