New York State’s Mobile ID (MiD) app has reached a significant milestone since its launch in June 2024, with over 200,000 residents now using the digital version of their state-issued driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID. The achievement represents a doubling of the user base from the 100,000 users reported in late 2024, showing rapid public acceptance of the technology.
The digital identification solution, available for both Android and iOS devices through their respective app stores, lets users carry a secure digital version of their identification documents on their smartphones. The system meets standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Academy of Motor Vehicle Administrators, following the ISO/IEC TS 18013-7:2024 standard for remote identity verification.
“We’re thrilled that more than 200,000 New Yorkers have embraced this revolutionary technology that enables secure, contactless identification right from your phone,” said Governor Kathy Hochul regarding the program’s success.
The MiD app features multiple security measures, including Face ID, Touch ID, or six-digit PIN authentication. All personal information within the app is encrypted and requires user consent for sharing. Usage data, including sharing details, remains encrypted and stored locally on the user’s device, with no external tracking or transmission. The security design reflects current best practices for digital identity protection and user privacy.
“So much in today’s world happens on your smartphone, and Mobile ID’s strong growth in less than 10 months shows that so many New Yorkers have wanted a simple and secure way to access their driver license, permit or non-driver ID directly on their device,” said New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder.
The digital ID system has gained acceptance at TSA security checkpoints in over 100 airports nationwide, including four airports in New York State. The expansion follows a broader national trend of digital ID adoption at airports, with multiple states implementing similar programs. The New York State Liquor Authority has authorized establishments with liquor licenses to accept Mobile ID for age verification during alcohol sales, marking a significant expansion of real-world applications for digital identification.
The system supports upcoming Real ID requirements, which become mandatory for domestic flights and federal facility access on May 7, 2025. New York residents must ensure their identification documents, including digital versions, comply with Real ID standards by presenting valid Social Security information and proof of New York residency. The digital transformation comes as part of a broader mobile identity market expansion that is expected to reach $22 billion by 2029.
