Next-Gen Qualcomm Sensors to Feature Precise Biometrics Tech

March 3, 2021

Precise Biometrics is providing the matching software for a pair of new fingerprint sensors from Qualcomm. The former’s BioMatch Mobile solution will be appearing in the latter’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 and 3D Sonic Max, both of which are in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensors built for mobile devices.

Next-Gen Qualcomm Sensors to Feature Precise Biometrics Tech

The 3D Sonic Gen 2 is an updated version of Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic sensor, and is 50 percent faster and 77 percent larger than its predecessor. The 3D Sonic Max, on the other hand, is Qualcomm’s largest ultrasonic sensor, with an active surface area of 600 square millimeters that is big enough to scan two fingers at the same time. The Sonic Max was first unveiled in 2019, and picked up an award at CES 2021.

The BioMatch Mobile algorithm comes with liveness detection to guard against spoofing. The two Qualcomm sensors will be featured in mobile devices that will hit store shelves in 2021, with the Sonic Gen 2 slated to appear in Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Series.

“We are pleased to provide our software for fingerprint recognition on devices enabled by ultrasonic fingerprint sensors from Qualcomm,” said Precise CEO Stefan Persson. “We look forward to working with Qualcomm to achieve design wins for flagship mobile devices.”

Qualcomm first licensed the BioMatch Mobile algorithm all the way back in 2016. Precise has since credited the arrangement for helping to fuel its growth as a company in subsequent years.
