PLDT, Inc. and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. have announced plans to launch three new anti-scam services in 2025, expanding their efforts to protect customers from cybercrime and fraud. The initiative supports the Philippines’ broader push toward secure digital identity, which includes the recent rollout of the national Digital ID system.
The telecommunications companies’ initiative comes amid growing concerns about scam activities in the Philippines, including an increase in grey market operations and deceptive practices targeting financially vulnerable individuals. The country has seen a surge in SIM swap fraud and mobile-based financial scams, similar to recent cases documented in other Asian markets.
The planned services encompass multiple approaches to combat fraud. The companies will implement advanced detection mechanisms designed to identify and flag suspicious activities at an early stage, including location-based authentication systems similar to those deployed by mobile security specialists in other markets. These technical measures will be complemented by public awareness campaigns to educate customers about cybercrime risks and prevention strategies.
As part of the initiative, PLDT and Smart will enhance their customer support infrastructure, establishing dedicated hotlines and online support channels for individuals affected by scams. The companies have also committed to strengthening their collaboration with law enforcement agencies to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of cybercrime cases, following recommendations from international security organizations.
The new anti-scam services expand PLDT and Smart’s existing cybersecurity measures, which complement the national mobile ID program implementation. The telecommunications sector has seen an increasing focus on consumer protection measures in recent years, as digital transactions and online activities have become more prevalent across the Philippines. The development is particularly significant given the country’s rapid adoption of mobile banking and digital payment systems, which require robust security measures to protect users from fraudulent activities.
The initiative also reflects growing regional trends in mobile authentication and security, with telecommunications providers taking more active roles in protecting their subscribers from sophisticated cyber threats. These efforts are becoming increasingly important as Philippines continues its digital transformation and more citizens rely on mobile services for essential transactions.
