Samsung has expanded the compatibility of its digital car key functionality in 2024, building on its initial launch with Genesis vehicles in 2021. The service now works with numerous Galaxy devices, including the S20 through S25 series (excluding the S20 FE), Note 20 series, Z Flip models from 5G through 6 series, and Z Fold models from 2 through 6 series, as well as the Z Fold Special Edition.
The digital car key system has been integrated with several major automotive brands. Volvo has implemented the technology in select models like the EX90, with availability in Europe, North America, Latin America, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Polestar is rolling out compatibility for its Polestar 3 model across Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The technology is also integrated into vehicles from Audi, BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia.
The system offers three distinct access methods: Ultra Wideband (UWB) for hands-free access, Near Field Communication (NFC) for tap-to-unlock and vehicle start capabilities, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for remote control through Samsung Wallet. The multi-technology approach matches similar implementations by competitors like Apple’s Car Key system, which also uses UWB technology. The implementation uses Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) standards and includes multiple security layers, including biometric authentication and PIN verification, supported by Samsung’s Knox security platform.
Samsung has also established a partnership with Chinese automaker BYD, whose Ato3 model has received over 1,000 pre-orders in its first week in the Korean market. BYD is expanding its presence with plans to launch the Sea Lion 7, a mid-sized electric SUV, targeting the segment that includes vehicles like the Sorento and Santa Fe.
User feedback has demonstrated the practical benefits of digital key adoption. “I no longer need to carry as many items in my pockets since my smartphone now replaces traditional car keys,” reported one long-term user. The shift supports Samsung’s broader strategy of consolidating digital credentials in Samsung Wallet, which has recently expanded to include mobile driver’s licenses in several U.S. states.
