Hot on the heels of the original’s release, Samsung has announced a new version of its Gear S3 Classic smartwatch featuring 4G LTE connectivity.
The new connectivity capability should further improve the user experience, providing a high speed network for data usage as well as sending and receiving texts and making calls, with the latter phone functions all going through the same number as the user’s smartphone. Perhaps most importantly, all of this is possible without the need to have a paired smartphone present.
In a statement announcing the new version of the smartwatch, Samsung Electronics America Marketing VP Alanna Cotton explained, “Adding LTE connectivity to the Gear S3 classic gives users the ability to stay connected on the go, even when they leave their phone behind.”
The functionality could give Samsung a considerable advantage in the smartwatch wars, with its leading competitor, Apple, having failed to integrate cellular support into its latest smartwatch device. Together with its Samsung Pay functionality and support for various other apps, it’s also helping to make smartwatch devices more competitive against traditional mobile devices, which could persuade more consumers to embrace the new device concept.
