Samsung has announced that it is enabling Samsung Pay for Visa Checkout purchases with online merchants.
In a statement, the company called it “a strategic partnership” that will see a co-branded Visa Checkout/Samsung Pay option appear for users of Samsung devices when shopping online. Clicking it will prompt authentication via the device’s fingerprint sensor, automatically filling in the customer’s payment details for the purchase.
As Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business CTO Injong Rhee explains, the partnership “benefits not only Samsung Pay users but also hundreds of thousands of online merchants who are looking for effective ways to increase their checkout conversion rates.”
Interestingly, while Mastercard recently announced that its Identity Check mobile authentication platform will be compatible with the iris scanning functionality of Samsung’s newest flagship smartphones, the announcement of the Samsung-Visa partnership referenced only fingerprint scanning. Still, with the Visa Checkout option set to arrive sometime “later this year,” there is still time for such functionality to be integrated.
