“The terms of the deal, which is currently being finalized, will see Viv Labs’ founding team continue to operate the company independently, while working closely with Samsung’s Mobile Communications arm.”
With voice-based AI assistants really starting to take off, Samsung is jumping into the ring with a new acquisition.
The company has bought Viv Labs, a San Jose-based startup that has been developing its own AI platform. The terms of the deal, which is currently being finalized, will see Viv Labs’ founding team continue to operate the company independently, while working closely with Samsung’s Mobile Communications arm.
In a statement announcing the acquisition, Samsung explained what makes Viv’s AI platform unique, asserting that it “allows developers to teach the system how to create new applications or to use existing applications,” enabling the development of a high-functioning “open ecosystem” that continuously learns.
With major companies like Google and Apple having invested heavily in the development of their own voice-based AI systems in recent months, and a new GSMA report indicating that this will be an increasingly important battleground with the continuing ascent of mobile technology, it’s clear that the Viv Labs acquisition could prove to have been a key one for Samsung in the near future.
