The FIDO Alliance has launched the world’s first global certification program for face-based remote identity verification solutions, with iProov being the first vendor to obtain certification under the program.
The “Face Verification Certification” process involves a minimum of 10,000 tests to assess a system’s performance across various demographics, including skin tone, age, and gender. It measures resistance to spoofing and deepfake attacks using the Imposter Attack Presentation Accept Rate (IAPAR) and evaluates usability and security through False Reject and Accept Rates (FRR and FAR).
The program also ensures that the “selfie match” capability of a given solution accurately matches a user’s selfie with their government-issued ID during the initial account setup.
The certification requirements are based on ISO standards and developed by a diverse group of stakeholders, including industry experts and government representatives. Two independent labs, Ingenium Biometrics and TÜV Informationstechnik, are currently accredited to support the program, with more expected to follow.
In a statement announcing the program, FIDO underscored the importance of ensuring high standards in biometric identity verification systems with respect to promoting adoption. The Alliance said that its own research had found that 50 percent of American and British consumers would lose trust in an organization found to be using a biased biometric system, and that 22 percent said they would stop using the service.
Thirty-seven percent of survey respondents also expressed concern about online identity verification given the rapidly advancing sophistication of AI-generated deepfakes.
“Remote identity solutions unlock huge benefits for governments, organizations, and consumers alike, but as appetite grows across the globe, there are understandable concerns mixed with excitement,” explained FIDO CEO and Executive Director Andrew Shikiar. “Certification unlocks the power of open standards and catalyzes ecosystem-wide innovation and opportunity.”
FIDO’s new Face Verification Certification program further extends the organization’s roster of standards-based assessment programs, building upon the previously launched Biometric Component Certification and Document Authenticity (DocAuth) Certification programs.
