Shopee has announced it will discontinue its DuitNow Transfer service via ID Type, effective March 19, 2025. The change affects users of the ShopeePay service who currently transfer funds using mobile numbers, National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers, or other identification types. The announcement comes as Malaysia continues to evolve its digital identity infrastructure, including the recent launch of its blockchain-based MyDigital ID Superapp initiative.
Though this specific transfer method will no longer be available, ShopeePay users will retain the ability to transfer funds to banks and e-wallets through alternative means, specifically by scanning DuitNow QR codes. The change supports Malaysia’s broader push toward more secure digital payment methods and enhanced electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) protocols in financial services.
The discontinuation modifies ShopeePay’s integration with DuitNow, Malaysia’s national real-time retail payments platform. DuitNow has been a key component of Malaysia’s digital payments infrastructure, enabling instant transfers between participating banks and e-wallet services using various identifiers. The platform has played a crucial role in Malaysia’s digital transformation, operating alongside the country’s national single sign-on identity management system.
The change affects only the ID Type transfer functionality within ShopeePay, while maintaining other DuitNow-enabled features. Users have approximately one month to adjust to alternative transfer methods before the service cessation takes effect. The transition occurs as Malaysia continues to strengthen its digital identity ecosystem through initiatives like MYEG’s blockchain-based digital identity system, which aims to enhance security and reduce fraud in online transactions.
