The smart clothing and body sensor market will reach a value of $19 billion by the end of 2022, predicts Tractica.
According to a new report from the market research firm, smart clothing shipments will grow from 1.7 million units last year to 26.9 million by 2022. Body sensors, used primarily in sports and medical applications, will see even bigger growth, rising from 2.4 million units shipped in 2016 to 92.1 million in 2022.
According to Tractica research analyst Sherril Hanson, the market for these technologies “is still in the beginning stages” and will see relatively slow growth “over the next year or two.” But an expanding range of devices and use cases will help to accelerate growth after that, with healthcare being a major market driver, and “particularly connected wearable patches.”
That latter trend may reflect a larger shift underway in the healthcare sector, which seems to be showing a growing appetite for biometric technologies for a range of applications.
