IDEMIA is looking to extend its eSIM reach to the United States through a new partnership with Soracom. Soracom is best known as a provider of IoT connectivity solutions, and will specifically be teaming with IDEMIA to bring the latter’s DAKOTA SMART eSIM solution to businesses throughout North America and Europe.
The GSMA certified IDEMIA’s embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC) for use in IoT devices in June of 2021, and then cleared the DAKOTA eSIM solution for use in connected cars later in the year. IDEMIA has already provided eSIM services for the Brazilian mobile operator TIM, though this will be the first time that DAKOTA SMART has been deployed in the US.
Together, Soracom and IDEMIA will try to kickstart eSIM and IoT development with a joint solution that will lower ownership costs and allow manufacturers to bring more devices to market in less time. Soracom itself runs a cloud-native development platform that will make it easier for organizations to create experiences that make use of the eSIM tech.
DAKOTA SMART also helps with management, insofar as the solution lets organizations issue SIMs remotely. The solution has been integrated with Soracom’s Subscription Containers to allow clients to monitor any profile tied to a Soracom data plan, and to ensure that customers still have access to all of the Soracom platform features when swapping between profiles.
“Many potential IoT applications have strict requirements in terms of highly constrained memory, power and processing capabilities,” said Soracom Co-founder and CTO Kenta Yasukawa. “Soracom and IDEMIA are removing these barriers to entry, making it simple for companies to build new, leading-edge IoT experiences for their customers around the world.”
For its part, IDEMIA stressed that its eSIM offerings have low power requirements, which makes them well-suited for IoT devices with power and processing limitations. Its offering is compatible with networks from 2G all the way to 5G, and comes in a number of different form factors for both industrial and consumer applications.
