Suprema Partners with Qualcomm on In-Display Fingerprint Biometrics

A new partnership with a high-profile sensor maker is laying track to bring Suprema deep into the smartphone biometrics market. The company has teamed up with Qualcomm, with the companies working together on in-display fingerprint sensor technology.

The partnership revolves around a licensing and distribution agreement concerning Suprema’s BioSign fingerprint algorithm software. Suprema announced version 3.0 of the software platform almost a year ago, positioning it as a solution tailored for the under-display fingerprint sensors that would shortly start to emerge in select smartphones.

For its part, Qualcomm has been a pioneer in this area with respect to fingerprint sensor hardware, and announced a new version of its technology in December called the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. In announcing its partnership with Qualcomm, Suprema suggested in a statement that it has tailored BioSign 3.0 for the 3D Sonic Sensor, which demanded an optimized algorithm for its “complicated sensing structure and image characteristics different from the conventional touch type fingerprint sensors.”

The announcement made no mention of forthcoming integrations of the combined technologies, but there are hints that one of them could be Samsung’s next flagship device in its Galaxy S series. Suprema noted in its announcement that its BioSign technology entered the smartphone market via an integration with the Samsung Galaxy J5; and there have been rumors that Samsung is working on in-display fingerprint sensor technology for the Galaxy S10, which is expected to be announced at the Mobile World Congress next month.
