Tennessee’s Austin Peay State University (APSU) has launched Govs Mobile ID, a digital identification system that will replace physical ID cards starting in the Fall 2024 semester. The aim is to enhance convenience for students by allowing them to access academic buildings, residence halls, and student services using a mobile ID on their smartphones.
The digital IDs will be distributed through Transact eAccounts, available on both the App Store and Google Play, with physical cards remaining an option for students without compatible devices.
The university has been preparing for this transition for several years, ensuring that new technology, such as readers and devices, is compatible with the mobile IDs. The project was officially approved in the autumn of 2022, and a soft launch of the Govs Mobile ID took place in January of this year.
The preliminary rollout has allowed APSU to address potential issues, with the main concern being whether the ID would function if a phone’s battery dies. To alleviate this worry, the system includes a five-hour battery reserve for iPhone users.
In addition to access to campus facilities, the Govs Mobile ID will support Govs Bucks, an online debit account for students to use at various campus venues. Android users can link funds through Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet, while iPhone users can do so via Apple Wallet.
The mobile student ID’s launch comes in the same week that the State Election Board in neighboring North Carolina concluded a contentious vote approving the use of a digital ID for voter identification in the upcoming presidential election. That decision specifically concerns the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s digital ID, with the Board’s vote divided along party lines.
