TikTok has unveiled a new security feature called Security Checkup, providing users with a centralized dashboard to manage and enhance their account safety settings. The tool consolidates various security features into a single, easily accessible interface within the app’s Settings and Privacy menu, marking a significant expansion of the platform’s security infrastructure.
The Security Checkup tool incorporates multiple security measures, including backup login methods that allow users to link their accounts with phone numbers or email addresses. Two-step verification adds an additional security layer when logging in from unfamiliar devices, while device monitoring enables users to review and remove unauthorized device access.
Users can activate biometric authentication options such as Face ID or Touch ID through the dashboard. The platform has also implemented passkeys as an alternative authentication method, moving beyond traditional password-based security. These passkeys, which follow FIDO Alliance standards, can use device-specific authentication methods like facial recognition or PIN codes, offering a more secure and convenient login experience compared to conventional passwords.
The system includes proactive monitoring capabilities, automatically scanning for suspicious account activity. When unusual behavior is detected, the Security Checkup tool alerts users and prompts them to review potential security concerns, building upon TikTok’s recent partnerships with major technology providers to enhance authentication security.
“With its clear, comprehensive view, users can take control, make updates in seconds, and stay safe and secure with confidence,” said Kim Albarella, Head of TikTok Global Security.
The launch occurs amid ongoing discussions about TikTok’s data security practices, particularly in the United States, where the platform faces a deadline of April 5, 2025, to complete a sale to a non-Chinese buyer, following directives from both the Biden and Trump administrations. The development follows several congressional investigations into TikTok’s data handling practices and concerns about potential links to Chinese authorities.
The Security Checkup feature can be accessed through TikTok’s Settings and Privacy menu under the Security and Permissions section, where users can follow step-by-step guidance to configure their security preferences. The rollout represents part of TikTok’s broader strategy to address growing demands for enhanced digital security and user privacy protection.
