TikTok, the popular social media platform, is taking a significant step towards enhancing user convenience and security by introducing support for passkeys on iPhones. This new feature allows TikTok users to sign in to their accounts using either Touch ID or Face ID, eliminating the need for traditional passwords. Passkeys are password replacements that leverage encrypted biometric authentication methods already available on iOS devices.
Initially, TikTok is rolling out passkeys in select regions, including Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America, with plans to expand the functionality to more regions and operating systems in the future. This means that users in the United States and Android users can expect passkey support to be introduced down the line.
Enabling a passkey on TikTok is straightforward. Users can navigate to the app’s settings and select the new “Passkey” option. By following a few simple steps and confirming the passkey on the iOS system prompt, users can set up their passkey for passwordless authentication.
TikTok highlighted the advantages of passkeys in a blog post, emphasizing that this new login method simplifies the process and significantly reduces the risk of account compromise. By eliminating traditional passwords that can be stolen, forgotten, or reused across multiple accounts, passkeys enhance both security and user experience.
TikTok has also become a member of the FIDO Alliance, joining tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. In a statement, FIDO Executive Director Andrew Shikiar said that his organization’s purpose is to establish “open standards for passwordless authentication that are being utilized by leading service providers to allow consumers to have easier access to leading online services such as TikTok.”
Other major tech brands that have enabled support for passkeys lately include PayPal, Kayak, Best Buy, eBay, GoDaddy, Google, and Dashlane. The popular coding platform Github enabled passkey support for its public beta users last week.
