Tokyo-based MoriX to Develop Biometric Payment Cards Featuring T-Shape Sensor

Tokyo-based MoriX to Develop Biometric Payment Cards Featuring T-Shape Sensor

Fingerprint Cards has found another partner to help fuel its growth in the emerging biometric payment cards market.

In this care, the partner is MoriX Co., a Tokyo-based electronics company. Founded in 2005, the company has long been involved in biometric technology; for example, it announced the development of a biometric smart card back in 2018, and the company launched a biometric hardware wallet for crypto assets last year.

Now, thanks to the new partnership, MoriX will work with Fingerprint Cards to develop biometric payment cards that will feature FPC’s T-Shape sensor module. First launched in 2017, the T-Shape is designed specifically for integration into cards, and has therefore proved to be an important part of FPC’s broader portfolio.

In a statement announcing the new partnership, MoriX Business Planning Chief Akio Nishimura indicated that his team was drawn to Fingerprint Cards’ superior biometric technology.

“We selected the biometric solution from Fingerprints since they have the leading technology in the market for contactless biometric payments, with proven performance and the lowest power consumption,” he said.

For Fingerprint Cards’ part, Payments & Access SVP Michel Roig emphasized that the partnership will help to extend the reach of FPC’s technology into Japan, where MoriX is “a leading innovator”. The use of biometric authentication in a contactless payment card is expected to remove the ¥20,000 payment cap that is currently in place for contactless transactions in the country.

The partnership’s announcement comes after a corporate communication from FPC last month in which the company explained how an outbreak of COVID-19 in Vietnam could impact its supply chain and Q2 revenues.
