Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) in New Orleans is now one of 27 airports in the United States accepting mobile driver’s licenses and identification cards through apps like LA Wallet at TSA checkpoints.
The initiative, announced by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, aims to enhance security and streamline the travel experience.
“We are unveiling technology that is the 8th airport in the United States of America with leadership assembled that has made it happen,” said Cantrell. “So with that, we’re going to go up the escalator and we’re going to meet our agents at TSA and we’re going to deliver real results for the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans.”
Passengers can use their mobile IDs by tapping their phone or scanning a QR code in the app, though they are still required to carry their physical IDs as a backup in case the digital ID cannot be verified.
Louisiana is the eighth state to offer digital IDs compatible with TSA scanners, joining states like Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland and Utah. Up north, Air Canada became the first airline in Canada to accept digital ID for travelers last year, following the announcement of a pilot project in July.
The introduction of this technology at MSY was marked by an event featuring key figures including OMV Commissioner Dan Casey and TSA Security Director for Louisiana Arden Hudson.
