Turkey’s Garanti BBVA has become the latest bank to embrace the selfie onboarding trend, and has selected Aware as its vendor for the biometric technology.
In collaboration with domestic partner DVA Bilgi Teknolojileri A.S., Aware is providing its Knomi solution, which revolves around the use of facial recognition. An end user is asked to submit a selfie image along with pictures of their official identity documents, and the biometric technology matches them together, thereby enabling remote identity verification.
It’s an approach to authentication that has surged in popularity in recent years, particularly in the wake of a pandemic that has rapidly accelerated digital transformation and, in the financial services sector, prevented customers from doing business at physical branches.
For its part, Knomi is distinguished form a number of other selfie onboarding solutions with its support for voice recognition, which can be used to add an extra layer of security. It also features built-in liveness detection capabilities and is capable of reading more than 6,000 government-issued identity documents.
Garanti BBVA will use the solution to let customers open new bank accounts remotely via its mobile app, with no need for an in-person interaction.
“Knomi is an ideal solution to incorporate into our mobile application, providing our customers with a simple and secure method to open new accounts and verify their identities from the convenience of their own homes,” said Garanti BBVA Retail Digital Solutions Director Burçin Bıkmaz. “We had a tight timeframe and a number of local regulations to overcome with this partnership, and we are happy to have successfully addressed them with help from Aware and DVA.”
The Garanti BBVA partnership builds on Aware’s growing business in the financial services sector, where a number of banks have embraced the Knomi solution. Part of its success may be attributed to its customizability, with DVA Managing Partner Gokhan Gozutok asserting that “Aware made a huge customization in the workflows to comply with expected Turkish regulation.”
Aware recently showcased the Knomi solution at this year’s Connect:ID conference in Washington, D.C.
