The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an extension of the deadline for free online Aadhaar updates to June 14, 2025. The extension gives Indian residents additional time to update their demographic information in the national identity system at no cost.
The deadline, which was originally set to expire on December 14, 2024, has been extended as part of UIDAI’s ongoing efforts to maintain accurate identification records within the Aadhaar system. The extension especially benefits individuals who received their Aadhaar cards more than a decade ago and have not updated their information since then. The initiative supports UIDAI’s broader efforts to enhance the national ID program’s authentication capabilities, which recently expanded to include facial recognition options.
Residents can access the free update service exclusively through the myAadhaar portal, where they can modify demographic details including name, address, date of birth, and mobile number. The update process requires users to log in using their Aadhaar number and an OTP verification sent to their registered mobile number. Users must upload scanned copies of valid Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents. After completing the submission, residents receive a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) for tracking purposes.
Maintaining accurate Aadhaar records has become increasingly important due to the system’s vital role in India’s digital transformation. The Aadhaar platform serves as a cornerstone of India’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, which has helped the government save approximately $40 billion through improved fraud prevention in welfare distribution.
Following the conclusion of the extended period on June 14, 2025, updates will require payment and must be processed at physical Aadhaar centers. The established fee for offline updates will remain at Rs 50 per request.
UIDAI has emphasized the significance of maintaining current Aadhaar records, as accurate demographic information is essential for accessing government services and benefits. The authority particularly encourages updates from individuals whose records have remained unchanged for ten years or more, ensuring the continued effectiveness of what has become one of the world’s largest biometric identification systems.
