The Ukrainian State Special Communications Service (SBU) has issued warnings about emerging artificial intelligence-based fraud schemes that show increasing sophistication in cybercriminal operations. The agency’s alerts come amid a rise in AI-powered cyber threats globally, following a pattern of increasingly sophisticated digital identity theft schemes that have affected millions of users worldwide.
Criminal groups are using AI technology to automate and enhance various fraud techniques, including the creation of counterfeit invoices that are increasingly difficult to distinguish from legitimate documents. The schemes extend to cryptocurrency-related fraud, where threat actors deploy AI-driven phishing campaigns to target potential victims. The evolution in fraud tactics has prompted the development of enhanced security measures, including multi-factor authentication solutions specifically designed for cryptocurrency protection.
One notable example of AI-enabled fraud occurred when Arup, a London-based multinational design and engineering firm, suffered losses of approximately HK$200 million ($25 million USD) in a deepfake scam. Deepfake technology, which uses AI to generate synthetic audio and video content, has emerged as a significant security challenge. In response, identity verification providers like Nametag have introduced specialized deepfake detection capabilities to combat these sophisticated threats.
Ransomware operations have also grown more sophisticated through AI implementation. The LockBit ransomware group, which extracted an estimated $90 million from U.S. victims between January 2020 and June 2023, continues to evolve its technical capabilities. The trend matches security experts’ predictions about the increasing convergence of AI technology and cybercrime, as previously highlighted in analyses by cybersecurity firms like BioCatch.
The SBU’s response encompasses multiple strategic elements, including intelligence gathering on cybercriminal tactics and techniques. The agency is working to understand how threat actors deploy AI in their operations while developing countermeasures.
