Xiaomi’s Gaming-focused Redmi K50 Features Curved, Side-mounted Fingerprint Sensor

February 17, 2022

Biometrics News: Xiaomi's Gaming-focused Redmi K50 Features Curved, Side-mounted Fingerprint Sensor

A new smartphone from Xiaomi has become the first mobile device to implement the second generation version of Fingerprint Cards‘ curved capacitive fingerprint sensor.

The device in question is the Redmi K50, which officially launches in China this week. Targeted primarily at mobile gamers, the device features a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen, a 4,700mAh battery, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and shoulder buttons along the lines of those that can be found on numerous controllers for video game consoles.

The FPC1552, meanwhile, is integrated into the side of the device and offers a curved form factor “for a more seamless integration,” Fingerprints explained in a statement announcing the smartphone integration.

The company announced its first curved, side-mounted sensor solution, the FPC1542, in the autumn of 2020, with then-Mobile Business Line SVP Ted Hansson explaining at the time that Fingerprints was responding to “growing demand for sensors that offer maximum design flexibility without compromising on security or functionality.” The sensor would go on to be integrated into multiple Xiaomi smartphones, becoming a highlight in an FPC business update in May of 2020.

“We’re excited to have established a new segment of capacitive fingerprint sensors for smartphones, where our innovative technology is powering the latest designs,” said Hansson, in the company’s latest announcement. “Yet again we’ve been chosen by Xiaomi and continue our strong and long-term relation with an industry leader.”

Hansson is now the President of Fingerprint Cards’ China-based subsidiary, the result of a corporate restructuring following a strategic review launched by the company’s Board of Directors last summer. When the restructuring was announced in November of 2021, Fingerprint Cards explained that Hansson would head the mobile-focused Fingerprint Technology Company based in Shanghai, while Michel Roig would head a payments and access control-focused subsidiary called Fingerprint Cards Switzerland.

In its latest corporate update, Fingerprint Cards explained that the restructuring officially took effect on January 1. In the company’s announcement about the Redmi K50 sensor integration, Hansson’s role is listed as “President Mobile, PC & Access China at Fingerprints”.
