ZTE has become the latest smartphone maker to implement both in-display fingerprint scanning and facial recognition into a new flagship device.
The biometric capabilities are among the specs of the new Axon 10 Pro smartphone, which is billed as being the first smartphone to incorporate an AMOLED touchscreen into a curved display. Other notable features of the device include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, a 4,000 mAh battery, a triple-camera rear-facing imaging system supported by AI optimization, and DTS:X Ultra 3D sound.
It isn’t yet clear who is the supplier of ZTE’s in-display fingerprint sensor technology, though it may be worth noting that Fingerprint Cards has provided ZTE with fingerprint sensors in the past, and has recently been offering a new in-display solution to its partners.
While facial recognition became a salient feature of new smartphones launched in the wake of 2017’s iPhone X – the first of Apple’s devices to feature the Face ID system – and in-display fingerprint scanning has emerged over the past several months as another differentiating feature of new smartphones, ZTE placed no great emphasis on these features in announcing the Axon 10 Pro. That attests to how quickly such biometric technologies can become standard features of mobile devices, and may add further incentive for holdouts like Apple to incorporate in-display fingerprint scanning into their forthcoming devices.
Further to that point, the Axon 10 Pro will launch in the US with a price tag of $549 for an 8GB model and $599 for a 12GB model. Given that Apple’s iPhones are likely to cost about twice as much, some consumers may wonder why the new iPhones only support facial recognition.
ZTE’s Axon 10 Pro will be available for preorder starting August 28th through Newegg, B&H Photo, and ZTE’s US website.
