Deloitte has named smartphone mobile payments its top predicted tech trend for the coming year, according to a Canadian Press article appearing on CBC News. The announcement comes via a new report that features a number of interesting and perhaps surprising figures on the rise of mCommerce.
For one thing, last year saw a 1000 percent increase in the use of smartphones for in-store payments. That’s huge. And Deloitte predicts that by the end of 2015, five percent of all smartphone users will have performed such transactions. The researchers say that this year could be the “tipping point” for this kind of mCommerce, which offers retailers the benefit of speed in processing payments, and customers the benefit of convenience.
A spokesman for Deloitte pointed to the growing ubiquity of smartphones equipped with NFC technology, and indeed, there has been a flood into the market in the wake of Apple’s pioneering efforts with its Apple Pay mCommerce platform. The rollout of that system also spurred Apple to make fingerprint-scanning technology standard on all of its mobile devices, which in turn has also prompted market rivals to do the same.
While Deloitte’s report focuses on Canada, this year will also see three different mCommerce platforms launch and compete in the giant Chinese market, which will give in-store mobile payment an even bigger spotlight as the year goes on.
