Samsung is going to integrate a Morpho (Safran) biometric solution into its Android devices. It’s a software development kit for facial recognition, and a new partnership will see Samsung ICT division Samsung SDS integrate it into a new multimodal authentication platform.
It’s meant to enable a biometric alternative to passwords, and lets developers leverage devices’ built-in cameras—those found on smartphones, laptops, tablets, and so on—for facial biometric identification. Moreover, the solution is based on FIDO Alliance standards, and Morpho says it features integrated liveness detection.
For Samsung, it’s a valuable addition to the fingerprint recognition technology that its platform was already using. Commenting in a statement, Samsung SDS Mobile Payment Business VP James Choi explained that by “adding face recognition technology to our FIDO solution, we will be able to deliver enhanced value to our enterprise customers to accelerate market penetration.”
Morpho says the solution will also come to all iOS devices. With both Android and iOS covered, Morpho’s solution will cover a huge swath of the mobile sector, marking a huge advance in its relatively recent campaign to move aggressively into the mobile space.
