Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) has expanded the DigiYatra biometric passenger processing system to two additional locations in Kerala – Mangaluru International Airport and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The expansion brings DigiYatra capabilities to all seven operational airports under AAHL’s management, marking another milestone in India’s push toward digital aviation infrastructure.
The DigiYatra initiative, launched by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, employs facial recognition technology to enable paperless travel and streamlined passenger processing. The system was initially implemented on August 15, 2023 at five airports: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Guwahati. The rollout builds upon earlier biometric implementations at Indian airports, including SITA’s contactless kiosks introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The facial recognition system allows passengers to move through various airport checkpoints without presenting physical documents, creating a more efficient process while reducing paper usage. The technology provides identity verification through biometric data, which enhances security while decreasing wait times at passenger touchpoints. The approach matches current global trends in aviation biometrics, as facial recognition becomes increasingly standard for passenger processing.
“We have seen a substantial rise in the adoption of DigiYatra by passengers, with some of our airports showing a use rate as high as 37 percent in one day. More passengers are opting for the convenience and speed of DigiYatra, thereby redefining their travel experience,” said Jeet Adani, Director of AAHL. These adoption rates are particularly noteworthy given the relatively recent implementation of the system.
The implementation represents part of AAHL’s broader strategy to modernize India’s aviation sector through technological innovation and enhanced passenger services. The DigiYatra system complements other digital identity initiatives in Indian aviation, including mobile passport technologies and contactless passenger processing solutions that have been deployed across the country’s major airports.
