Apple has launched iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, introducing “Apple Intelligence,” an advanced suite of AI tools designed to enhance language and image processing capabilities on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. Available exclusively in US English, these new features build upon previous Siri functionalities, combining on-device processing with Apple’s secure cloud computing infrastructure for more demanding tasks.
Key language features in Apple Intelligence include AI-driven tools for adjusting tone and proofreading in writing, AI-generated summaries for priority notifications and emails, transcription tools within Notes, Voice Memos, and Phone apps, and a new Focus mode called “Reduce Interruptions” that filters notifications based on context.
Image capabilities in iOS 18 are centered around “Image Playground,” allowing users to generate images based on text prompts and suggested concepts. Additionally, users can generate images including people from their Photos library, a feature that may attract scrutiny in areas with biometric privacy regulations, such as Illinois under its Biometric Information Privacy Act.
Apple underscores its commitment to user privacy with its Private Cloud Compute platform, used to send relevant query data to secure data centers for additional processing without permanent data storage. This infrastructure aims to protect user information while enabling advanced AI functionalities that could push Apple’s ecosystem into new AI applications, all while aligning with Apple’s privacy-first approach.
