Taiwan-based biometrics developer Egis Technology Inc. will be showing off a few new products at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), including a fingerprint sensor, a wearable device and a desktop authentication platform.
There has been a massive proliferation of fingerprint sensors over the past few years, in large part led by their growing ubiquity on smartphones, and with Egis’ new EH570 we’re starting to see how minutely developers now need to distinguish themselves from the competition. In a press release, Egis focuses on both the versatility of its new sensor – able to scan in wet and dry conditions, and adaptable as a home or side button on a smartphone – and also it’s small size, for which it is rather cautiously hyped as “currently the world’s smallest rectangle shaped fingerprint touch sensor in EgisTec’s lineup”.
Meanwhile, the company is also placing a heavy focus on its security standards with its other new offerings. The YuKey SmartBand, a wearable device featuring “a combination of sensors including fingerprint, heart, and activity”, meets FIDO 1.0 specifications in its data security, as does the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), an access control platform for cloud-based data that also employs fingerprint scanning.
The nod towards FIDO security standards are perhaps a clear sign of the serious security threats poised to take advantage of the rise of the Internet of Things, and the continuing migration of information into the cloud, and it’s certainly a smart business move in terms of getting an edge over less qualified competitors. Participants at CES will get to judge for themselves when they get their first-hand looks at the new products in Las Vegas over the next few days.
