Consumers around the world want advanced communications features from their MNOs, according to a new report from the GSMA. Entitled “The Future of Mobile Communications,” the report is based on a GSMA-commissioned survey of 4,045 individuals across China, India, Spain, and the US.
In a statement announcing the report, the GSMA asserted that consumers are interested in instant messaging, photo-sharing, live video calling, and other services enabled by VoLTE (voice over LTE) and RCS (rich communications services). And while such services are proliferating in the form of internet-based apps from third party developers, the GSMA says that its survey found that consumers would prefer to get them from a single MNO, with 79 percent of respondents saying that such services would be relevant to them. And while MNOs’ financial models probably wouldn’t involve direct fees for such services, the GSMA predicts that in some markets they could bring in up to $5 billion in related revenues between 2015 and 2020.
The report’s release coincides with this week’s Mobile World Congress Shanghai, organized by the GSMA and featuring a range of major companies showcasing sophisticated connectivity solutions, and talks on security and digital identity.
