Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has received a major new order for its FPC1025 fingerprint sensor, the company has announced. Valued at 75 MSEK, the contract will see the sensors shipped between March and July of this year for deployment in China-made smartphones.
Speaking in a press release, FPC CEO Jörgen Lantto credited the order to momentum built from previous FPC sensor deployments, asserting that in the wake of “the previously announced launches of Huawei Ascend Mate 7 (using FPC1020) and Oppo N3 (using FPC1021), multiple smartphone manufacturers in China have selected FPC1025 as their touch fingerprint sensor.”
It can’t hurt that mobile commerce and payment are starting to really take off, and a number of smartphone makers are now seeking to get biometric technology installed into their devices for secure user authentication; indeed, earlier this year FPC teamed up with O-Film, a Chinese touch panel company, as part of an effort to take advantage of this market.
FPC hasn’t explicitly stated which partners have placed its latest order, but given that the sensors will be used by smartphone makers in China, it may continue to provide benefits as the mobile commerce and payment industry heats up in that region over the next year, with players like Apple Pay, Android Pay, and Alipay poised to face off, and Samsung Pay likely to jump into the ring as well. Meanwhile, the company’s recent partnership with Atmel Corporation may get it a footing in the burgeoning Internet of Things market – another potentially lucrative position.
