New Xiaomi Phone Features Ultra-Thin In-Display Sensor from Goodix

November 7, 2019

Biometrics News - New Xiaomi Phone Features Ultra-Thin In-Display Sensor from Goodix

Goodix’s new ultra-thin optical in-display fingerprint sensor has finally reached the commercial market with the launch of the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro smartphone. The release extends Goodix’s recent focus on in-display fingerprint biometrics, which are now available in a smaller and more convenient form factor with the debut of the ultra-thin model.

Of course, Goodix has provided in-display fingerprint technology for numerous technology partners and smartphone manufacturers in the past few months. The company placed a scanner in the Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition, as well as the Reno Ace and the OPPO K5 from OPPO.

It’s also worth noting that this is not the first time that Goodix has supplied Xiaomi with in-display fingerprint technology. A Goodix scanner was featured in the Mi 9 Pro 5G and the limited edition Mi Mix Alpha earlier this fall.

The move is in keeping with a broader trend towards in-display fingerprint scanners. Several Apple patents (and insider rumors) have indicated that the iPhone maker is looking to use the technology to reintroduce Touch ID to the iPhone in some form, while Samsung made in-display fingerprint biometrics a key feature of its flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone.

In the meantime, Goodix has accused Egis Technology of patent infringement in a complaint that concerns the company’s in-display fingerprint technology.
