Fingerprint Cards AB has announced the second design win for its FPC1021 sensor in as many days. The Swedish fingerprint technology manufacturer has been selected to provide its mobile optimized biometric sensors for an Asian smartphone OEM’s flagship model.
The project has a planned mass production start date in August 2014 and, as such, the design win came with a related initial ramp order worth SEK 5 million.
As is expected with this kind of news, the OEM is remaining anonymous until further notice.
The FPC1021 was designed with mobile devices in mind, optimized for Android and Windows smartphones. It was built on the technology of its predecessor, the FPC1020, and is 33 percent smaller, meant for use in situations where design space is limited.
Just yesterday, FPC announced that the same sensor was selected by one of China’s top five OEMs on a device slated for mass production in October. A sales volume of 3 million units is expected to move thanks to the Chinese design win.
Fingerprint Cards continues to be optimistic, with president and CEO Johan Carlström saying, “We expect several more design wins for our touch fingerprint sensors during the coming months.”
A recent report from Markets and Markets predicts that the global fingerprint sensor market is in a growth period, expected to reach 14.35 billion by 2020. The research points to mobility as a key factor in this growth and singles out APAC as the major geographical contributor to the market.
