Gemalto and Huawei have teamed up to develop low-power narrowband IoT modules. Huawei’s work on the project is being conducted through its semiconductor subsidiary, HiSilicon.
Huawei is bringing its narrowband IoT chipsets to the table, while Gemalto is taking care of the solutions’ cellular connectivity and digital security aspects. The companies say their solutions could enable devices to run on a single battery for up to a decade.
In a statement announcing the partnership, the companies pointed to applications such as “smart parking sensors, intruder and fire alarms, personal healthcare appliances, tracking devices, and street lamps to name a few.” The head of Huawei’s LTE business, meanwhile, added that his firm expects to be working on 30 narrowband IoT networks in 20 different countries by the end of 2018.
The collaboration also underlines Gemalto’s expanding efforts in IoT connectivity, with the firm having announced last week a new IoT module supporting 12-band LTE, 3G, and 2G cellular connectivity.
