Mobility is entering the vertical markets in interesting and convenient ways now that biometrics and strong authentication have made the jump to increasingly prolific smartphones. In the realm of physical access control smartphones are now becoming security credentials, bringing a sort of BYOD level of convenience to opening important doors.
Today, HID Global has announced a new solution that stand to go a long way in making access control as convenient as possible without sacrificing security. HID Mobile Access transforms trusted Android and iOS devices into credentials meant to replace keys and smart cards.
The new mobile solution is powered by HID’s Seos technology, an aspect that the company believes will open up the application possibilities offered by HID Mobile Access. According to HID, the solution holds the potential to be used for PC login, time and attendance, EV charging and biometrics applications in the future.
Selva Selvaratnam, senior vice president and chief technology officer with HID Global, says that the Mobile Access solution opens a new chapter in the creation and management of digital identities, allowing users to open doors using the broadcast range of their smartphones. No peripherals are required, just a trusted device.
Selvaratnam says, “Already proven in a number of successful pilots at major universities and businesses, our HID Mobile Access solution offers more secure, convenient and flexible access control, along with a best-in-class Mobile ID delivery process that is as easy and straightforward as downloading music.”
Though not expressly a biometric access control solution, the potential to eventually allow cleared persons to use the fingerprint sensors or authentication software on their phone to access critical areas will go a very long way in breaking down the barriers of adoption in next generation physical access control.
