Huawei, Telus Complete Successful 5G Trial Based On 3GPP Standards

June 23, 2017

“The pilot project was undertaken at Telus and Huawei’s 5G Living Lab in Vancouver, where the companies also deployed an experimental 5G ‘Heterogenous Network’ last autumn.”

Canadian telecom Telus and China-based ICT solutions provider Huawei have completed a successful pilot test of a 5G network based on 3GPP standards, the companies have announced.

Huawei, Telus Complete Successful 5G Trial Based On 3GPP StandardsIn a statement announcing the successful trial, the companies explained that it entailed the use of “equipment based on 3GPP 5G foundational technologies”, referring to the consortium of telecom standards bodies that is now working out 5g specifications. A 28GHz, “point-to-multi-point” connection was established between the pieces of equipment – “an incredibly rewarding accomplishment” for the Telus and Huawei teams, commented Telus Technology Strategy EVP Eros Spadotto.

The pilot project was undertaken at Telus and Huawei’s 5G Living Lab in Vancouver, where the companies also deployed an experimental 5G ‘Heterogenous Network’ last autumn. The companies say that this kind of 5G technology will start to become available in 2020, but that Vancouver residents will see “early access”.

3GPP’s 5G standards, meanwhile, are expected to be finalized early next year.
