IDEMIA, JCB to Launch Biometric Credit Cards in Japan

IDEMIA, JCB to Launch Biometric Credit Cards in Japan

With excitement over biometric payment cards now firmly beyond the boiling point, one of the first major deployments might be about to take shape in Japan. IDEMIA (formerly OT-Morpho) has announced a new partnership with Japanese credit card company JCB that will see the latter introduce IDEMIA’s F-Code solution to its customers.

The biometric payment card solution was demonstrated at this year’s Mobile World Congress by Oberthur Technologies, shortly before the company officially merged with Safran Identity & Security to form OT-Morpho, which later rebranded to IDEMIA. The F-Code solution is an otherwise normal payment card that features a built-in fingerprint sensor, which is used to authenticate a user at the time of a transaction, effectively replacing the need for a PIN.

It’s one of multiple emerging solutions as various fingerprint sensor specialists and major payments services firms like Mastercard have sought to pioneer the biometric payment card concept. While Mastercard’s partner IDEX has indicated that those companies are expecting a mass rollout of the technology early next year, IDEMIA and JCB’s partnership announcement offered no timeline for the deployment of their solution. But the announcement itself may be an indication that a launch is slated for the near future.
