“In addition to a refined user interface, the new app will offer a number of powerful security features.”
Microsoft is combining its enterprise and consumer authenticator apps into a single package, the company has announced. On August 15th, it will launch Microsoft Authenticator, aiming to replace the separate apps currently available for Azure AD enterprise clients and Microsoft account users.
In addition to a refined user interface, the new app will offer a number of powerful security features. A push notification feature will require only a click for authentication, for example. And the app will offer wearable support via Samsung Gear and Apple Watch devices. It’s also going to enable fingerprint-based authentication on Android and iOS, and enterprise customers will have the option of signing in via certificates rather than passwords.
In a blog post announcing the move, Microsoft Identity Division Director of Program Management Alex Simons explained that while the company usually opts to announce new offerings when they are ready for launch, it’s giving enterprise customers “some time to plan” for Microsoft Authenticator. And with other major offerings like Google Authenticator helping to raise the profile of multi-factor authentication services, Microsoft’s update could see considerable interest from the enterprise sector when it arrives.
