Healthcare solutions in identity management are becoming increasingly necessary. Time is of the utmost importance when it comes to clinical professions, and the difference between having and not having the convenience of mobility can easily equate to a malady being treatable or turning out to be too far gone.
The situation becomes complicated because of the necessary security and privacy precautions that must be considered when handling patient information. At last year’s Biometrics UnPlugged event, Dr. John D. Halamka gave some real examples of how one compromised device on a network can grow into an international security concern. The risk in handling personal medical information is extremely high.
Generally, when we talk about mobility entering the healthcare space it is through a combination of secure networking innovations, strong biometric authentication, robust mobile device management software and a fully realized BYOD policy. There is an alternative to this high stack of necessities, however, and it’s from Calgary Scientific.
The company’s solution, ResolutionMD, can be used in the diagnostic process. It is a patient health information (PHI) viewing tool that keeps all sensitive information on the hospital’s secure servers. It is HIPAA compliant and guards patient privacy by design.
Since the images and records are only viewed by the end-user device and not actually downloaded, a lost or stolen device becomes less of a security risk. The records stay where they belong, in the secure health system.
Recently, Pierre Lemire, Calgary Scientific’s president and CTO, published a blog about how ResolutionMD complies with HIPAA while satisfying the needs of medical professionals.
“When no PHI is stored on any mobile device there is literally no risk of a security lapse from a lost or stolen tablet or smartphone,” writes Lemire. “Policy leaders are calling for vendors to provide this out-of-the-box security to ease the burdens of secure health IT implementations.”
