Princeton Identity Tech Powers Galaxy S8 Iris Scanning

March 31, 2017

“Princeton Identity was also the supplier of the iris scanning technology in the Galaxy Note7, Samsung’s aborted first effort in mobile iris scanning.”

The iris scanning functionality of Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy smartphones is powered by Princeton Identity technology, the biometrics specialist has announced.

Princeton Identity Tech Powers Galaxy S8 Iris ScanningFor those who have followed Samsung’s efforts in mobile biometrics over the past year, it will come as little surprise that Princeton Identity is behind the technology. The company is a spinoff of SRI International, a longtime collaborator with Samsung; and it was launched with the backing of Samsung Ventures. Princeton Identity was also the supplier of the iris scanning technology in the Galaxy Note7, Samsung’s aborted first effort in mobile iris scanning.

In a statement announcing the use of the company’s iris scanning technology in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Princeton Identity CEO Mark Clifton suggested that it was the first of many to come, asserting, “Iris recognition is key in the next wave of mobile.”

Ahead of the devices’ launch, Samsung is placing a strong emphasis on the security and convenience enabled by their biometric capabilities, particularly iris scanning and facial recognition. If the devices prove popular among consumers, it could encourage other OEMs to embrace iris biometrics – and possibly Princeton Identity technology – as well.
