“It’s the latest signal that mobile iris scanning is about to take off…”
EyeLock has established a licensing deal with Qualcomm Technologies.
The agreement will see EyeLock’s iris recognition technology integrated into Qualcomm Mobile Security, the security platform of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon microprocessor platforms for mobile devices. More specifically, the technology will be incorporated in Qualcomm Mobile Security’s new Camera Security component.
In a statement announcing the agreement, Qualcomm Technologies Senior Director of Product Management Sy Choudhury explained that Qualcomm’s Camera Security system “is designed to provide maximum security for the most personal information – the iris biometric template, the key to all data.” Choudhury added that its integration of EyeLock technology “helps accelerate the utilization of iris biometrics.”
It’s the latest signal that mobile iris scanning is about to take off—an trend established in large part by the pioneering work of Samsung and its iris-scanning Galaxy S8 and S8 Edge devices—as Qualcomm’s technology could help to shepherd iris biometrics support into a range of devices. The deal is also the latest example of Qualcomm’s heavy investment in mobile biometrics, with the company currently leading the charge toward in-display fingerprint sensors as it also seeks to bring standard touch sensors to more devices down the price spectrum.
