Samsung is working on a rival to the Amazon Echo.
It’s just what you do if you’re a big tech company right now, apparently. Google has already put out its smart home solution, as has Alibaba; Apple’s HomePod is on the way; and even Facebook is reportedly working on a smart home device for next year.
Speaking to CNBC, Samsung mobile head DJ Koh said work is currently underway on Samsung’s own smart speaker, saying, “Maybe soon we will announce it.” Koh didn’t offer any details, but did say that the company’s aim is “to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices,” suggesting that there will be a high level of interactivity between the smart home device and Samsung phones and other devices.
There is also likely to be a growing role for Bixby, Samsung’s big new AI assistant, which recently saw a global expansion in availability, despite an inability to speak or understand any languages other than English and Korean. Bixby is learning. Support for more languages is on the way, as is the ability to control Spotify, among other new capabilities, and it’s a fair bet that a familiarity with Samsung’s Echo rival is in store, as well.
