An experimental technology lab within Samsung has come up with a new virtual reality system that relies on facial biometrics for user interaction.
Called FaceSense, the system assesses changes in expression and gaze, as well as basic voice commands – “home”, “back”, “cancel”, and “select” – to intuit how users navigate VR worlds. It was developed by Samsung’s Creative Lab department, and recently showcased at the VRLA Expo 2017 in Los Angeles using a Samsung Gear VR headset.
While more traditional video game or computer interfaces are likely to dominate consumer VR products for some time, in a statement announcing FaceSense, Samsung said that it could “lead to the development of further biometric technologies that allow more individuals, including those with various usage impediments, to enjoy immersive VR experiences.”
For now, though, it offers an interesting application of Samsung’s VR headset, and further demonstrates the company’s position near the forefront of consumer biometric technology, alongside its latest flagship smartphones and their use of fingerprint, facial, and iris recognition.
