Samsung has filed a patent application describing an in-display fingerprint sensor system.
As Galaxy Club reports
, the patent was recently filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Its focus actually isn’t so much on the technology allowing the fingerprint sensor to be integrated into a smartphone’s display, but rather on a pressure sensor system designed to discern between normal screen interaction and a finger pressed against the screen for a biometric scan.
These kinds of patent filings should never be taken as definitive proof that a given company is actively pursuing the technology outlined, of course; in many cases giants like Samsung and Apple are just covering their bases in case they may want to adopt such technology in the future. But news of this patent application comes soon after KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo – a well-respected mobile industry analyst – asserted in a note to investors that Samsung’s next Note device will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. Given that the Note 8 was launched in August, that suggests Samsung could be the first to market with a viable in-display fingerprint sensor in the summer of 2018.
There has also been speculation that Samsung’s Galaxy S9 will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, but given that that device could launch near the beginning of 2018, it’s a tall order, technologically. In any case, these indications of Samsung’s abiding interest in-display fingerprint sensors suggests it may see the technology as an important competitive advantage as it prepares to go up against Apple’s iPhone X, which uses 3D facial recognition as its only method of biometric authentication.
