“…the move reflects broader support for iOS users, with Santander recently having enabled Touch ID login for its mobile app.”
Santander Bank has enabled Apple Pay for its American customers, allowing them to upload their Mastercard payment cards to Apple’s digital payments platform.
For the Boston-based bank, the move comes surprisingly late in the game. Most major American banks have long since enabled Apple Pay support, and Santander itself announced Apple Pay support for its UK customers in the autumn of 2015, and in Spain this past December.
Nevertheless, the move reflects broader support for iOS users, with Santander recently having enabled Touch ID login for its mobile app. Commenting in a statement announcing the Apple Pay functionality, Santander Head of Consumer and Business Banking Michael Cleary said the bank has responded to customer demand “by investing more resources in our mobile banking platform and upgrading the digital tools and services customers need to truly bank anywhere with Santander, and Apple Pay is a great example of that innovation.”
Apple Pay is the leading mobile payment platform, according to a recent report from Juniper Research, and is expected to continue its dominance of the emerging market over the coming year, at least.
