Competition is heating up over the security in your pocket. Today, Sensory announced a new biometric solution optimized for smartphones, tablets and PC platforms: TrulySecure. A software-based multi-factor product, Sensory’s new technology suit is aimed at bringing accessibility to the consumer logical access control market.
Sensory’s technology is available to OEM product developers as a software development kit. Authentication with TrulySecure happens on-device, meaning that the face and voice data uses to authenticate never has to be transmitted for access to be granted.
According to the company’s press release announcement, TrulySecure isn’t just attacking old PIN and password security, but also taking aim at fingerprint biometrics.
Sensory makes the claim:
“High end mobile phones have begun using biometric fingerprint solutions for entry, but consumer acceptance has been poor because of the need to frequently re-swipe the finger to gain access. The added cost for the fingerprint feature is $5-$10 per phone, making it expensive to implement. Sensory’s approach uses the existing microphone and camera so there is no added hardware cost, making it applicable for lower cost devices, while improving on accuracy across a wide range of environmental conditions.”
This position is aggressive and indicates a rapidly growing competition in the consumer biometric market.
As recently reported by Mobile ID World, everyday users are about to be presented with a lot more opportunities to adopt fingerprint biometrics on their mobile devices. Apple’s upcoming 2014 product releases are all expected to include Touch ID biometric sensors. At this year’s WWDC, Apple announced that its new mobile operating system, iOS 8, will open up Touch ID to third party developers.
This move shifted the focus from simple “easier and better than a PIN” thinking to a representation of quality by support and application. During the demonstration of third party apps leveraging Touch ID, Apple used the example of a mobile banking app that uses fingerprints instead of passwords.
TrulySecure has the advantage of being multi-factor and contactless.
“Sensory is continuing to exhibit leadership in handsfree control by allowing a secure multimodal biometric that doesn’t require touching devices to make them work,” says Opus Research senior analyst Dan Miller. “Combining biometrics is an excellent approach to improving accuracy and performance across environmental conditions.”
Going hands free is an increasing trend in smartphone authentication, part of what is being referred to as “the mobile promise.”
