Japan-based telecom SoftBank will use Gemalto’s On-Demand Connectivity for remote SIM provisioning.
In a statement announcing the partnership, Gemalto suggested that its ODC platform will give the MNO “a competitive edge” in offering digital services not just for smartphones, but other Internet of Things devices like wearables, smart meters, and connected cars.
The company also highlighted the “great momentum” of the IoT in Japan, citing projections from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) indicating that the country’s IoT revenues will reach $130 billion this year, reflecting a CAGR of 11 percent. JETRO recently helped to highlight the Japanese government’s vision of an IoT-enabled “Society 5.0” future for the country at this year’s CeBIT expo in Germany.
The SoftBank partnership indicates growing momentum for Gemalto’s ODC solution, with Norwegian IoT/M2M operator Com4 and IT giant Microsoft having signed on to employ the solution in recent weeks.
