Microsoft is already taking preorders for its Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover. The cover is meant to enable keyboard typing and touchpad navigation for Microsoft’s advanced new tablet.
It has one other major feature too: A built-in fingerprint scanner. Compatible with the Windows Hello biometric authentication system built into the new Windows 10 OS, the fingerprint sensor allows users to log into their tablets with a simple tap of the finger. Moreover, it can facilitate further authentication online, for example by allowing a users to scan their fingerprints to confirm app purchases from the Windows Store.
The Surface Pro 4 Type Cover complements a suite of other sophisticated Windows 10 devices that Microsoft just launched, many of which also feature biometric capabilities. The new Lumia smartphones, for example, are among the first in the world to feature iris scanning authentication for user. Microsoft is evidently keen to incorporate this kind of security into all its new products, and could be a major influence in further broadening the reach of biometric technology in consumer electronics, much like how Apple helped to pioneer smartphone fingerprint authentication via its Touch ID system over last two years.
