TouchID may soon appear on more Apple laptops and mouses, if “a sketchy rumor” is to be believed. Reporting on gossip from Apple.club.tw, MacRumors’ Joe Rossignol notes that while the site has provided reliable inside information in the past, there are reasons to be skeptical in this case.
According to Apple.club.tw’s sources, the fingerprint-scanning TouchID system may soon appear on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops, as well as on the Magic Trackpad and the Magic Mouse. The problem, Rossignol says, is that in the area where the system is rumoured to appear on the laptops – right above the trackpad – there is very little space. As for the Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad, it might be problematic that they are wireless and would have to be able to transmit the TouchID data securely.
On the other hand, Apple is an aggressive technological innovator, and has a strong incentive to find new avenues through which to push its relatively new Apple Pay service – especially now that it’s getting high-level endorsements and is poised to compete against other mCommerce services in the massive Chinese market. TouchID data is already wirelessly transmitted on Apple Pay through devices as small as the standard iPhone, so it’s not inconceivable to imagine such a solution appearing for the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. As for fitting TouchID on Apple’s laptops: They fit it on a smartphone. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
