“The accreditation comes at a time of growing interest in biometric authentication technologies among banks around the world, and of increasing activity in Brazil’s IT security sector.”
Industry consultancy UL says that its São Paulo lab has received accreditation from the country’s leading association of banks for its expertise in biometrics. The accreditation means that UL is now qualified to provide certification services for Brazilian banks’ biometric systems.
In a statement announcing the accreditation, UL highlighted a ‘hackathon’ event it organized last summer, the focus of which was to break or trick biometric security systems. As UL Transaction Security Advisory and Innovation Leader Chen Chi explained, the effort demonstrated that while “systems based on biometrics have issues,” UL is in a position “to help institutions to improve their practices and ensure the benefits of this technology to its customers.” The firm’s association with the FIDO Alliance also likely helped it to make its case, with FIDO’s approach to authentication now lauded by huge supporters like Facebook and Google.
The accreditation comes at a time of growing interest in biometric authentication technologies among banks around the world, and of increasing activity in Brazil’s IT security sector. For example, last August NEC announced that it had acquired Brazilian IT security firm Arcon Informatics, explaining that Brazil’s IT security market “is expected to grow particularly fast over the upcoming years.” That bodes well for UL, which is now in a position to help banks transition to a new era in IT security as biometrics continue to boom.
